Something a little bit different this month!
Anyone who follows us on social media will be aware that we were completely thrilled and surprised to win the 2025 British Fantasy Award for Best Audio last month. In our somewhat unprepared acceptance speech, we said that sometimes it feels like no one out there is listening, that we are putting out content and it’s just disappearing into the ether. But awards like this remind us that what we do matters.
We’ve always tried to have a mix of guests on our podcast, putting big names alongside debut authors who might be struggling for exposure on this first outing into publishing. We aim to keep the focus on creators from minority groups who might not otherwise get to speak about their work. So, if you’re out there, and you’re a member of Fantasycon who voted for us, then have a huge, heartfelt thank you from the three of us.
Conventions are a big thing for writers like us, but what do we get out of them? Are there different conventions you can go to if you’re a writer or a reader or a reviewer? Since it was, in fact, a convention that brought the three of us together, we thought it was high time we talked about our convention experiences, the pros and cons, and how anyone can meet their favourite authors and find a new tribe of book geeks.
For this discussion, we are joined by Katie Bruce, a writer and Virtual Assistant to authors. Katie is also the in-person events organiser for the British Fantasy Society in Yorkshire, and you can usually identify her by the tasty treats she shares at Fantasycon that she has baked herself.

Katie Bruce is a writer and Virtual Assistant to authors, based in Yorkshire. Her writing is mostly fantasy based and often features the wonderful moors and hills that decorate her home county. Her Virtual Assistant work with Katie’s Author Assistance includes all the non-writing work that goes alongside being an author, leaving you time to do the important writing part. Outside of all that, Katie can usually be found baking up tasty treats – which she then shares around at FantasyCon, so keep an eye out for red hair and a tote bag full of treats. She’s pictured here at the premiere of Man & Witch.
