Dark academia is a genre that has proven pretty popular. We’ve all been to school and plenty of us have been to university, so is it the pull of nostalgia that attracts readers? Or were our school days so dull that we crave reimagining them with a healthy dose of magic? Perhaps the boiling pot of tension and emotion that is the educational institution is just an incredibly fertile playground for fantasy writers.

But with a title like “dark academia” how much academia do readers expect? Just how dark can you go? And is it a genre that naturally aligns itself with romance since so many of us experienced love of some sort or another when at school or university?

Here to talk dark academia with us is Danielle Knight, author of the refreshingly original, A Rather Vengeful Accord.

Danielle Knight is an avid fan of gothic fantasy, romance, and horror, which will become all too apparent for readers of her debut novel, A Rather Vengeful Accord. After receiving her MA in Creative Writing & Publishing from Kingston University, she moved into digital sales for a children’s publisher in London. She mostly spends her time watching anime, playing video games, and typing various arrangements of words.
